Shahnaz Husain's Homemade Cleansers

Renowned beauty expert Shahnaz Husain shares her ideas on how to keep your face sparkling and spotless by using these natural ingredients from your kitchen:

Facial Cleansing:
1. Almonds (Badaam): Pour hot water on the almonds and allow them to soak till the skin comes off. Dry them and grind them into a powder. Keep this in a jar. Daily add a little milk to some of the powder and use the paste to cleanse the face by rubbing the skin gently with it. Almond powder can also be added to face packs.
2. Cabbage: Cabbage is rich in vitamins and minerals. Boil cabbage in enough water. Cool the liquid and use it to wash the face.

Hands
Sugar and lemon juice can be rubbed on the hands to soften the skin and cleanse it.

Elbows And Knees
Lemon: Take two lemon halves and rub them on the elbows and knees. It cleanses the skin and lightens skin colour over a period of time. However, this remedy should not be used on facial skin.

Gums
Baking powder: Take a little baking powder and rub on the teeth. This helps to whiten and cleanse the gums.

Potato Power
* To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.
* Slices of raw potato (chilled if you like it better) are an excellent treatment for under eye circles. Just place the potato slices on your lids and relax for 15 minutes to half-an-hour. To make sure that you use this treatment everyday, make it a routine every night when you go to bed. No need to wake up to chuck those slices after use. Keep a cup next to your bedside on which you can place these so that you throw them away only the next morning. But do remember that you need enough good sleep and you also need to give your eyes enough rest to avoid dark circles. If you over-work your eyes you may find it difficult to get rid of dark circle.

Almond Oil Face Wash
* Almond oil is high in vitamin E content and is very effective for dark circles and even excessively dry skin.
* To make an excellent face wash, powder the almonds and mix with fresh cream or cold milk.
* Apply this mixture on your dark circles and even rest of the face and neck, leave on for five minutes and wash well with cold water.
* You will feel fresh and smooth after this face wash.

Fenugreek
* Powdered fenugreek and milk are said to tackle dark circles.
* Apply a paste of fenugreek mixed in milk on dark circles in the night.
* Wash off in the morning, and watch dark circles vanish for good.

A Natural Skin Bleach
* If you don't have pimples or sensitive skin try this. Use the watery layer you find on yogurt/curd and take about a teaspoon of it.
* Add a couple of drops of lemon. Apply this mixture evenly all over your face. Leave on for as long as you can (for half an hour minimum to even leaving it overnight). This acts as natural bleach.
* If you want to get rid of a suntan, use this mask overnight after a long day under the sun. You will not have any tan the next morning!
Sandalwood & Rosewater Sunscreen
* This cooling herb has medicinal properties that help heal without leaving behind any scars. What's more, sandalwood is a natural sunscreen and protects the skin against heat and radiation. No, you don't need to you walk around with a sandalwood mask on your face all day!
* But by applying a mask at least once or twice a week, you help your skin become sun-resilient. Sandalwood may be expensive, but remember that a small piece of sandalwood can last for years.
* Try to get the rarer Rakta Chandan or red sandalwood. This reddish variety (unlike the common yellowish variety) has the best properties of the wood minus the fragrance.
* Pour some water (rose water preferably) into a mortar and then rub the sandalwood stick till you get a paste of medium consistency. Apply and leave on skin till dry and wash off gently with lukewarm water.

Mango Scrub & Avocado Masque
Try them together to get the full benefits! - When used together, these two treatments will exfoliate, tone, and nourish your skin with natural vitamins and nutrients that can only be found in fresh wholesome ingredients. Here are our recommendations for a satisfying spa experience at home...
Set the mood by finding a space in the house where you will enjoy an uninterrupted hour. Add your favorite things to the room like candles, soft music, glass of water w/Lemon, etc..). If your space is the bathroom, make sure to have your soft towels and wash cloth ready. If you will be taking a bath, fill the bath with nice warm water and your favorite bath salts.
Bring everything into your special room on a tray for ease of use (and cleanup). Include your fresh ingredients, a paring knife to open the fruit, a spoon to remove the pulp, a fork to mash the fruit and for stirring, 3 small dishes (two for the final formulas and one to separate the egg white into), a small strainer, a measuring cup, and a teaspoon. Three important additions for making a well rounded spa treatment will be an all-natural cleanser and moisturizer, and a hydrosol.
Fill the measuring cup with a 1/2 cup of warm tap water, or other type of warmed water. Add your 2 tablespoons of Oats to begin the making of your Avocado Masque. Set aside to let it soak for 20-30 minutes.
If you're taking a bath, this would be the time get in and cleanse your face. Massage the cleanser on face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms and lower legs and feet.
Soak a washcloth in the warm water and gently remove cleanser.
Stand, and repeat above two steps on the rest of the body.

Follow the directions for the Mango Scrub (below). This is great for face, body or both.
A nice gentle hydrosol such as Lavender or Chamomile would feel and smell great at this point. Apply some to a cotton ball and massage the skin with it to remove any excess Scrub.
Finish making your Avocado Masque, and massage it into the skin. Continue massaging and reapplying for 10-20 minutes. Either drain the bath at this point while you stand and it treats the entire body, or use the masque just on the face, neck, chest, etc.. while you remain lounging in the tub. When it's time to remove the masque, use a warm washcloth to gently remove the excess.
This would be a great time to enjoy a shower to wash hair and make sure you're clean all over. Then finish with a cool rinse. This step takes some getting used to. Start with the hair and scalp, then the face, and if you're so bold, next the body. This final step of your shower really tightens the pores and makes you feel refreshed.
If you feel that you need a moisturizer, this is when you'll want to apply it gently into the skin. And whether you use a moisturizer or not, a lovely spritz of your hydrosol before and after will feel so yummy. Enjoy!

- Papaya/Mango Scrub -
Ingredients:
1/4 Mango (1.15 oz) You may substitute with Papaya
1 teaspoon Honey
1 teaspoon Almond Meal
Directions:
Mash the Mango very well with a fork. Stir in the Honey, then add the Almond meal. You should have a workable paste that you can spread and massage on a freshly cleansed skin. Be especially gentle on the face. You'll receive the enzymatic action of the Mango as well as the manual exfoliation of the Almond Meal. So this is a powerful exfoliation treatment. The Honey acts as a mild buffer and humectant. After massaging for 5-10 minutes, gently remove with a warm washcloth.
This is the perfect 'before' treatment to the SharAmbrosia Avocado Masque. Otherwise, apply your moisturizer.

-Avocado Masque -
Ingredients:
1/4 Avocado (1.05 oz)
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons Oats
1 Egg yolk
Directions:
Add 1/2 cup hot water (not boiling) to measuring cup. Add Oats and let them sit in the water for 20-30 minutes (this is a good time to cleanse your skin and give yourself an exfoliating treatment). After the Oats have softened, mash the Avocado very well with a fork. Stir and press the Oats in the measuring cup, then strain two teaspoons of the Oat water into the mashed Avocado. Stir them together. Separate an Egg, and add just the yolk to the mixture. Stir well. Apply this mixture to either your face, or face and body for a nourishing and softening mask treatment. Don't let it dry completely, just keep applying and massaging for about 10-20 minutes. Gently remove with a warm wash cloth, then add your favorite all-natural moisturizer.
This is the perfect 'after' treatment to the Mango Scrub. Otherwise, use on a freshly cleansed skin.
Beauty Care - The All Natural Way
I am of the firm opinion that all-natural beauty products are not only effective, they are superior to the standard beauty products that are being sold today. Just like natural food has become accepted and revered, natural beauty care is finally beginning to receive the credit that it deserves. There are no strict standards in place to guide consumers to the real thing when it comes to completely natural. So it's buyer beware, and be educated as to what constitutes a completely natural product. When you see the word "natural" on a beauty product, it is basically meaningless. This is a buzz word that is routinely used to entice you to buy products. Read your ingredient labels carefully. If you see any long chemical names that you can barely pronounce, there's a very good chance that it is not a completely natural product.

You may ask, "So what's the problem? I've been using these kinds of products all my life." Again, I would suggest that you compare your beauty products to food. And you should! The skin that surrounds your entire body takes in a large portion of whatever is put onto it. If you think that skin doesn't absorb, then think about birth control and Nicotine patches. Skin does absorb, and it is presently absorbing toxins every day if you use beauty products that contain potentially dangerous ingredients. It may be a small amount on a daily basis, but when used constantly throughout your life, it can be quite a large amount, some of which remains! Sure, these chemicals have been tested, but when all of these chemicals are put into the body, they merge with each other. These combinations, have not been tested. So basically speaking, you are the guinea pig.
Completely natural beauty products are not just watered down replicas of the store bought versions. They are the real thing. More and more companies are coming forward, bringing their wonderful, truly natural products to the market under the name all-natural or organic. So your options are opening up, but continue to read your labels. You may have to use these products up more quickly, and protect them from excess heat, light and bacteria. You may find them to be a little less refined in their appearance. What you will have are rich, full-bodied products, that work with your body, not against it. In turn, your skin will thank you with radiant, healthy beauty. After using un-natural products for years and years myself, I was amazed at the difference! My skin seems to be getting younger and healthier all the time.

Make your own all-natural beauty products
Make Your Own Beauty Products
Rather than going to your bathroom shelves for your beauty products, just take a trip to your kitchen pantry. Because we all start off with different skin types, there will be differences to keep in mind when formulating your homemade beauty recipes. We'll focus on facial masks here. These are easy to make and use, and you will probably find most of the ingredients in your kitchen right now. For those ingredients that you don't already have, just take a trip to your grocery or healthfood store.

Basic Skin Types and Their Particular Needs -
Sensitive Skin - A sensitive skin reacts the most to changes in temperature, skincare products, and seemingly... everything. If you have a sensitive skin, your goal is to bring it to a more normal range. This can be acheived by finding a skincare routine that works for you (and of course is all-natural). Learn to treat it with the care that it deserves. Do not use anything that makes your skin tingle or burn. Use soothing ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Honey.
Oily Skin - Generally your skin becomes greasy in appearance within an hour or two after cleansing, and remains that way throughout the day. The pores are usually enlarged. This is usually hereditary, but is manageable through proper diet and skincare. The usual method for dealing with this type of skin is to dry it out. This is just a temporary fix though, which just creates more of the same as the body tries to lubricate the dry surface. I prefer to treat this skin as more of a normal skin type, don't dry out, and don't add too much oil. Eventually the oiliness calms down. There are ways to reduce pore size naturally, which helps the overall appearance. Cucumber and Tomato will be good choices to reduce large pores (mash and apply, or mix with yogurt for more creaminess). Also clay masks (look for Bentonite or Fuller's Earth at your healthfood store) will help to purify and tighten the pores. Just make a paste by mixing with water.
Dry Skin - Diet, heredity and age play a role here. After forty, most of us need more help in keeping the skin supple and moist. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet, including some oil (fish oils are great), and give yourself nourishing facial mask treatments weekly. Avocado and Banana are good choices for dry skin. When mixing your masks, you may want to add a bit of a good, rich oil such as Avocado, Wheat germ or Almond. Egg Yolk is also a good choice for feeding your skin what it needs.
Acne Prone Skin - Acne can be one of the most devastating problems, especially when it is on your face or body. Improper skincare, nutrition, hormones, and even stress can play a role. Make sure to keep hands and face very clean, because acne can spread once it has started. Never squeeze blemishes, they can break open beneath the surface and cause internal havoc, not to mention scarring. Cleanliness is key to getting rid of acne. For individual breakouts, try treating them with raw Garlic (antiseptic). Also, when you are tempted to squeeze, apply a dot of moist clay to the blemish. This will not only stop you from picking, it will also spot dry, without drying out the entire face. Remove the clay spot later carefully by moistening first with a warm wash cloth.
Combination Skin - A person with this type of skin will usually have an oily T-zone, with a normal to dry cheek area. When using your masks, you can work on supplying the needs of each area with different ingredients, or by using the same ingredients that will be effective for both. See Oily and Dry Skin categories for your choices.
Dull Complexion - The dullness, or grey appearance can come by the lack of good circulation, or by excess dead skin buildup. Both of these situations can be improved by using the correct skincare products and measures. Exfoliation is the key for this type of skin to bring it back to a radiant glow. Try a manual scrub using either ground Oats, Corn meal, or Almond meal, mixed with Honey or oil . Or try an enzymatic exfoliant such as Papaya (mash up the pulp and apply to the surface of the skin for about 5 minutes).

There are many fresh all-natural ingredients that can be found in your home
Some Simple Ingredients and What They Can Do -
Yogurt - Healing, cleansing, emollient, and mildly astringent. This is like dream food for the skin, it loves it! Use it for any skin type. Works well to soothe a sun or wind burn. Yogurt adds a nice creaminess to any mask, and helps to soften the skin.
Oatmeal - This soothing, emollient ingredient will make your skin amazingly smooth and soft. This can be prepared like your usual Oatmeal, and used as a calming, soothing facial mask. Or use it crushed up as the exfoliant in a scrub (mix with Honey or oil - See above).
Pumpkin - Loaded with vitamin C, this member of the gourd family is quite emollient. Mash the pulp and use it straight, or mix with Honey or yogurt for a more creamy consistency.
Cucumber - Bleaching, cooling, soothing, astringent and healing. You've seen Cucumber slices placed on the eyes during a facial, now you know why. Not only are they cooling and soothing to the eyes, they help to tighten the tissue with their astringent properties.
Carrot - Containing vitamin A, Carrots are also antiseptic. This is a very nourishing ingredient for the body whether used internally or externally.
Papaya - This tropical fruit contains protein digesting enzymes which help to relieve surface tension. It is usually used for its exfoliation properties. It is a powerful treatment, so be careful not to rub it into the skin. Just apply to the surface for just a few minutes.
Honey - One of the greats of all-natural skincare. Almost anyone can use this gift from the bees with its rejuvenating, hydrating, humectant (attracts water to the skin), soothing and healing properties.
Avocado - This fruit from California is loaded with rich oil that is quite nutritious for dry or mature skin. It's also an loaded with antioxidants.
Banana - Nourishing, works well on dry and mature skin.
Tomato - Being acidic helps to make this a wonderful ingredient for tightening pores. It's also rich in Vitamin C and Potassium.

Beauty Recipes Using Some of These Ingredients -
Honey Almond Scrub
This is a Honey Almond scrub with a Peppermint twist! This product will exfoliate your skin to help make it smoother and softer.
· 4 T Almond meal (or Almond flour)
· 2 T Jojoba oil
· 4 T Honey
· 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil
Pour the Almond Meal and Jojoba oil into a 4 oz cobalt or amber glass jar (preferably). Stir well. Then mix in the Honey and Peppermint essential oil. Keep stirring until the mixture is completely mixed.
To use: Cleanse the skin first. Apply about a teaspoon amount of the scrub to a moistened face. Mix with water to make it a more fluid application (do not add water to the jar, mix with the small amount of scrub in your hand). Scrub the skin gently in circular motions, letting the almond meal do the work (harder pressure will only damage capillaries!). Massage every square inch of skin except the delicate eye tissue. Remove with a warm washcloth. Be careful to remove every bit of the scrub. Apply a freshener or hydrosol with a cotton ball to remove any excess product. Finish by applying your moisturizer. Use about once a week to help keep the skin soft and smooth and relieve surface tension. This is a perfect treatment to have before applying a soothing mask.

Banana Facial Mask
· 1 ripe ripe Banana
· 1 T Honey
· 1/2 teaspoon Jojoba oil
· 1 T Yogurt
· 1 egg white
· 1 T Kaolin (white) clay
In a small mixing bowl, whisk the egg white, then blend in the yogurt, Jojoba oil, Honey and then the Kaolin clay until it becomes a smooth creamy mixture. In a separate bowl, mash up the banana until it is smooth, then blend into the first mixture.
The best way to use this masque is while sitting in the tub because it is a bit messy. Apply to the entire face, neck and shoulder area. As it sits, keep applying more while you build the masque up as well as massage it in. Let it remain on the skin for at least 10-15 minutes and then remove with a warm washcloth. Finish with a freshener or hydrosol on a cotton ball to remove any excess product from the skin, then moisturize as usual.
This is a wonderful softening and firming treatment in one.

Kelp Firming Mask
This mask treatment will help to soften and firm your skin at the same time.
· 3 T Yogurt
· 1 tsp. Organic Powdered Kelp
· 1 tsp. Honey
Place 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt into a small dish. Add the powdered Kelp, stir well. Add the Honey and stir until all three ingredients are blended into a smooth consistency.
To use: Cleanse, apply the mask all over face, neck and shoulder area. Massage lightly (the Kelp acts as beauty grains to promote exfoliation). Leave on for about 5-10 minutes. Remove with a warm washcloth. Use a freshener or hydrosol on a cotton ball for complete removal. Apply your moisturizer as usual. Kelp contains iodine, so those with iodine allergies should not use this mask

Scents of the Holidays!
Diffusing essential oils are a wonderful way to create the type of atmosphere where the children will be happy, the guests will feel welcome and stress for all will be relieved. It will enable your family and friends to feel at home and everyone will have a wonderful time. Here are a few blends to diffuse:

Holiday Spirit
5 drops Lime
2 drop Pine
1 drop Nutmeg
This blend has a woody spice scent and is very uplifting. It creates a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere. It is best avoided during pregnancy. Please do not misuse the Pine and Nutmeg as too much may be over stimulating and become irritating.

Balance Beautifully
3 drops Lime
3 drops Orange
2 drops Geranium
This blend has a citrus scent with a floral undertone. It will diminish irritability, ease stress & tension, and promote happiness. It works wonderfully for my children and encourages them to play nicely too.

Citrus Blend
3 drops Lemon
3 drops Orange
2 drops Grapefruit
This citrus blend is very smooth and refreshing and is especially helpful after eating a big meal as the essential oils will help with digestion and the feeling of being too full.

Sleep Ease
5 drops Mandarin
2 drops Lavender
1 drop Chamomile
This blend has herbal orange scent and children love it! One would use this blend at the end of the night to calm and relax in order to prepare for sleep. Sometimes when there is so much excitement in one day, the children end up feeling overwhelmed and cannot relax to fall asleep. They end up getting overtired. PS: works for adults too.

The Flu
3 drops Lemon
3 drops Eucalyptus
2 drops Ginger
I have included this blend for those who may be feeling like they have the flu during the holidays. This blend will lower a fever, halt any chills/sweats and reduce nausea. Alternatively, if you are dealing with a high temperature, place one drop of lemon and eucalyptus in one cup cool water and wet a wash cloth in the mixture. Place on forehead. Repeat until fever is down to normal (usually takes ½ hour).

If you are dealing with nausea, add 2-5 drops ginger (2 drops for young children – 5 drops for adults) to 1 tsp. vegetable oil and rub in a clockwise position on the stomach. This can be repeated until the nausea has subsided. Eucalyptus essential oil can raise blood pressure. Be careful if anyone present has this condition.

Coughs
3 drops Bergamot
2 drops Cedarwood (Atlas species only)
This blend will ease any coughs and helps to strengthen the respiratory tract. It works particularly well for bronchitis. It is also an anti-depressant and helps to reduce mucous production. If you can manage to find Cajeput essential oil, this works wonderfully on its own for most illnesses, especially the common cold.

How to Use Essential Oils in a Diffuser
Traditionally, a diffuser is where a tea light is lit under a bowl of water and the essential oils are added. Be careful not to let the water run out or the bowl will crack. Today, electric diffusers can be purchased where the essential oils are added to a pre-made slide and turned on or plugged into the wall.

The essential oils are usually added at eight drops at one time. You may find that in a small home, the scent may be too much. In this case, lessen the amount you add.

rinse.

in automatic drip coffee makers. Fill the reservoir with vinegar and run it through a brewing cycle.Rinse thoroughly with water when the cycle is finished.
31. Fabric Softener Replacement (Submitted by Cathrine) I use vinegar in place of fabric softener in my laundry. I use the same amount as fabric softener plus twice the amount of water (so 2 parts water, 1 part vinegar) and put it in my fabric softener dispenser. Clothes come out soft and scent free.
It also helps reduce static (I still have some but not enough for me to go buy fabric softener!).
32. General Household Cleaner (Submitted by Cathrine) I also keep some vinegar diluted in a
spray bottle. I use this for wiping down counter tops (at night only so smell goes away) and cleaning up carpet stains in combo with Oxygen Cleaner (generic OxyClean).
33. Removes smoke stains from walls (Submitted by Kathy) To remove nicotine from walls before painting, always use vinegar in hot water. Will remove stains and the nicotine will not bleed through the paint. It is especially good in bathrooms, where there is a lot of steam from showers. Be very careful to use rubber gloves because the nicotine will absorb into the skin and you will get the same effect as smoking.

The Flat Ab Diet Weight Loss Nutrition Tips
Just can't get rid of your flabby belly, even though you do sit-ups and crunches until you're ready to drop? Assuming that you are already physically active and have a sensible diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and low in fat and your belly is still a bit bigger than you wish, read on. If you want to go from fat to fab abs, new research shows that what you eat is just as important as how - or even how much - you work out.

Ab Diet Tip 1. Eat more fiber.
Not eating enough fiber may be a major reason women are getting fatter and flabbier. To ditch the fat and show off firm, beautiful abs, you need to eat at least 25 grams of
fiber daily, says leading fiber researcher David J.A. Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., Professor of Nutrition at the University of Toronto, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Food and Nutrition Board. Fiber, which is the indigestible part of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods, helps you achieve flat abs.
How to add fiber to your diet comfortably? One cautionary note: It's important to add fiber slowly but consistently to prevent gas. "Make higher-fiber choices throughout the day; don't have all your fiber in one bunch," Jenkins says. "This is particularly important with viscous fiber - a type of soluble fiber found in beans, oats and
barley that also has the benefit of lowering blood cholesterol," he says.
For best results, increase your fiber intake slowly over the course of one month and drink plenty of water to keep food moving through your system as quickly as possible.

Ab Diet Tip 2. Opt for a sensible amount of high-quality carbs.
For flatter abs, make carbs 45–- 65 percent (202 - 292) grams based on an 1,800-calorie diet) of your total daily calories. Balance is the key here, so don't go below 45 percent (202 grams), or above 65 percent (292 grams), which can lead to water retention, bloating and temporary weight gain that shows up in your middle.
When you eat carbs, they break down into glucose, which is stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver. When glycogen is stored, it carries with it three times its own weight as water, compared to no water at all for protein and fat, according to Peter Garlick, Ph.D., a professor at Stony Brook University in New York. If you eat an extremely high-carb diet, you may store excess water, experience bloating and gain temporary water weight. (This is why people who go on no- or very low-carb diets can initially lose weight so quickly. They're really just losing water.)
Focus on balanced eating. For best results, eat at least three to five 4-ounce servings of veggies (15 - 25 grams of carbs); two to four 4-ounce servings of fruit (30–60 grams of carbs) and about 1 cup (8 ounces cooked or 2 ounces dry, or 2 slices of bread) of
whole grains per meal (90 grams per day).

Ab Diet Tip 3. Drink up!
Many women believe that drinking too much water will give them puffy abs, but just the opposite is true. "Even though we associate water with being bloated, drinking more water can help to flush sodium out of the body, and that reduces the bloat," said Jeff Hampl, Ph.D., R.D., nutrition researcher and assistant professor at Arizona State University.
Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Beverages with little or no calories, caffeine or sodium, including herbal tea, are best. Avoid regular soft drinks and soups with lots of sodium. If you are eating plenty of water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and low-sodium soups, you can get half of your water requirements from foods, according to a 1998 NAS Food and Nutrition Board report.
Avoid carbonated drinks. Fizzy drinks, including soda pop and spritzers, increase bloating because the carbon dioxide trapped in the bubbles creates gas, which slows down stomach emptying.

Ab Diet Tip 4. Watch the sodium.
Sodium may have a bad rep, but it's essential for regulating body fluids and blood pressure as well as for nerve transmission, muscle function and absorption of important nutrients. But even a small amount of excess sodium causes bloating.
The American Heart Association recommends you consume no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium daily — roughly 1 teaspoon of table salt. That's enough sodium to replenish your supply even if you work up a major sweat.
Choose fresh, natural foods over fast, commercial or packaged foods. Instead of ordering french fries (265 milligrams of sodium), have a baked potato (8 milligrams). Instead of a pickle (1,730 milligrams!), enjoy a fresh cucumber (6 milligrams). And beware of cured meats: Three ounces of ham packs in 1,009 milligrams of sodium, compared to just 48 milligrams for the same amount of roast pork. Soups are also notoriously high in sodium; some canned varieties contain more than 1,100 milligrams per cup. Read labels carefully and stick with low-sodium brands like Healthy Choice.

Ab Diet Tip 5. Eat light at night.
It never fails: You have a heavier-than-normal evening meal or snack, and when you weigh yourself the next morning, you're up by several pounds. But as depressing as it may seem at the moment, such a quick gain is always water weight; you simply cannot gain that much fat overnight.
In a study conducted by Callaway, people who skipped breakfast or lunch and ate their largest meal later in the day had lower metabolisms. So by eating light at night you'll receive a double benefit: You'll wake up with a flatter tummy, and you'll also have a better appetite for a fiber-rich breakfast, which sets you up for a day of healthful eating. Some tips to get you started:
Eat five times a day. Your body needs food every three to four hours, so instead of eating three large meals, try to schedule five smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day (breakfast-snack-lunch-snack-dinner). By staying full and energized, you'll avoid hunger pangs, maintain an even energy flow, make better, healthier food choices (no binging or craving) and enjoy the most efficient burning of calories.

Ab Diet Tip 6. Reduce stress.
Research shows that stress triggers the hormone cortisol to turn up your appetite and deposit fat around the organs in your abdomen.
