100th Post of my Blog....it has to be special !

Firstly A big THANK YOU to all my readers !

Since childhood I have always been lucky to possess a clear and beautiful skin and I thank my genes and also my Ma (thats what i call my Mum) who made some lovely lotions and potions to keep my skin bright, beautiful and blemish free! Often people would ask me the secret to my skin and I would proudly tell them all about natural remedies straight from the Kitchen.

In my quest for natural beauty remedies and all things natural, I've come across a Lady called Sophie Ulliano Green Lifestyle Goddess, NY Times Best Selling Author, and Genius behind Gorgeously Green. After Julia Roberts wrote the forward to Sophie's first book, and they appeared together on an Earth Day Celebration special of the Oprah Show in 2008, Sophie shot to instant stardom and a "gorgeous green guru" empire was born! Millions of eco fashionistas, green conscious women, celebrities, and publications around the world went "gorgeously gaga" for Sophie's "Do It Gorgeously" approach to environmental living that is simple, easy, and FUN!

Part of Sophie's irresistable charm is that she makes "going green" FUN. Best of all, there is no "granola hippy" in sight with her ideas. They are CHIC! Hence the saying, "Do It Gorgeously!" If you think you can't be fashionable and green, think again. Sophie finds a fabulous healthy balance between sustainability and style. She has a saying, "there are different shades of green" where everybody can do their part and adapt an eco-friendly lifestyle in a way that feels comfortable and is achievable regardless of individual circumstances.

But my favourite way to learn is through the informative and entertaining Vlog and Gorgeously Green TV. These fabulous short online videos are full of fabulous Eco Chic DIY Tips! Sophie has wonderful gardening, cooking, and product advice. But the quick easy green recipes for natural organic beauty products and cleaning products are my FAVOURITE videos. I have made SO many of these recipes and they are just AMAZING!

Sophie has SO many incredible ideas on her website. Trust me, you will get lost in her "gorgeously green" world for HOURS and be better for it!
Sophie, thank you for graciously sharing your FABULOUS recipes

Aromatherapy & us
Does the aroma of warm apple pie bring back sweet memories of autumn afternoons in your grandmother’s kitchen? Does a passing whiff of perfume remind you of a love lost? If so, you have encountered the basic principles of aromatherapy. Smell can invoke memories and then more.

''Aromatherapy is where pure essential oils are used from flowers, leaves and spices for treatment in three ways – for the mind, stress related ailments and cosmetic reasons.”

I'm a firm believer in the healing powers of essential oils of the Bible. Why am I convinced? Because they have worked for me, my husband and my daughter. We have been using the essential oils for almost 6 years now and we have seen some pretty fascinating results. They heal, they are medicinal, they are aromatic and they are pure! The effects of these oils being ingested in to our systems through our olfactory organ can be quite beneficial to our overall health.

Oils have an astounding ability of penetrating the blood-brain barrier, that so many chemically designed medications fail to accomplish. Interstitial tissues, (which in simple English terms means small little spaces that exist between the organ and the tissue) are carried out by the brain in order to protect the neurons from damaging substances being permitted to reach them. This actually serves as a filter or sieve to the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. But oils can penetrate it!

Most molecules are too large to pass through but the blood-brain filter. Doctors seem to believe that in order for molecules to cross over this barrier, they must be less than 800-1000 atomic mass units. Oils are less than 500, which makes them quite capable of addressing and healing diseases. Yes, you heard me correctly ... I said addressing and HEALING diseases. It doesn't matter what kind of species inhales the essential oils ... they will still cross the blood-brain barrier. Amazing huh?

We have over 100 trillion cells in our body. Yet, one drop of essential oil can penetrate and cover every cell in our bodies. Why? Because essential oils don't overload the receptors in our brains, they actually work to bring a cleansing in to our receptors. This opens the communication line between our brain and our body and healing begins to occur in our cells.

Make Your Own Herbal Face Masks: 5 DIY Recipes with the Ayurvedic Facial Scrub

Herbal Face Mask
Face masks hold a special place in our skin routines. Cleansing gets us going in the morning, serums treat our wrinkles and discoloration, and facial oils keep us moisturized day in and day out.
But masks allow us to kick back, relax, and let our skin soak in the goodness. Depending on the ingredients, they can draw out toxins, brighten your skin tone, or help diminish wrinkles.
Check out another post on 5 Anti-Aging Mask Recipes using mostly simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. It’s great when you can treat yourself to a lucious spa-like treatment using fresh ingredients and without even leaving your house!
We wanted to kick it up a notch with one of our favorite ways to beautify: herbally.
Herbs are nature’s medicine, and each holds its own unique power. Your skin loves herbs, and masks give it a chance to receive more benefits (than if you just used an herbal face wash).

Inexpensive DIY Beauty Recipes for Your Face, Hair, and Body

Inexpensive Beauty Recipes
What is beauty? Science tells us that beauty is a function of our ancient instincts giving us some insight about the health of a person and whether they would be a good genetic match for our own genes to carry on our species. National Geographic tells us, “studies suggest attractive people make more money, get called on more often in class, receive lighter court sentences, and are perceived as friendlier.” That’s right. We’re a bunch of cover judgers. We just can’t help it.
With or without the science, “beauty” is a booming industry. It doesn’t come cheap and it’s easy to get swept up in the “buy more to be more” mentality. As you organic beauties know, most of the products out there have chemicals in them and even though those chemicals might help maintain the phenotype of beauty, they certainly don’t help keep your body healthy and strong.
Because we think that beauty is a side-effect of eating well, taking care of our bodies, and taking care of our skin, I’d like to share some inexpensive ways to feel healthy and beautiful.

For Your Face

Herbal Face Steams

Let’s start with the easiest beauty trick out there – and my favorite. Herbal steams are such a good way for your body to receive herbal love. They help hydrate your skin and help you to detoxify through your largest organ!
Just put a few drops of essential oil or a couple of tablespoons of your herbs into a pot of water and let it simmer on the stove. Get a big towel and drape it over your head and the pot of water so that the towel traps the steam from the pot. Take deep breaths of the steam. That’s it! Easy, right? And, because your skin is hydrated and your pores are open, your skin will readily accept your skincare routine! So following with a hydrating serum or moisturizing oil is a good idea.
There are lots of different herbs you can use in your steam. For an easy, all purpose steam that feels good and smells amazing, herbs like rose, lavender, and rosemary are perfect.
For colds or anything sinus/lung related, I like eucalyptus, mint, and thyme together and taking long, deep breaths of the steam until I can breathe in fully and comfortably.

Facial Masks

We have talked about face masks before, but I’ll give you another recipe that’s a cheap and easy way to keep your face beautiful.
Facial Mask for Normal or Dry Skin:
  • ¼ an avocado
  • 1 spoonful of plain greek yogurt or kefir
Mix it up and slather it on. Leave it for 15 minutes. Wipe or rinse it off and continue with your routine.
Facial Mask for Oily Skin:
  • Juice from ¼ a lemon
  • 1 spoonful of raw honey, softened
Mix it together and spread it evenly on your face. Leave for about 15-20 minutes and make sure to wipe or rinse it all off when you’re finished.

For your Hair

The best piece of advice I can give you to growing luscious locks is to make sure that your body gets the vitamin A and the protein that it needs (there’s that health piece). Your hair, skin and nails are made of keratin, which is a tough form of protein made in your body. What you ingest has a huge impact on your products of keratin.

Hair Rinses

An apple cider vinegar rinse once a week after shampoo and conditioning is great for balancing the acid mantle of the scalp and removing any leftover soap that may be trapped there.
For one rinse:
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
Just pour the mixture over your whole head, massage it into your scalp and let it dry.
I like to add herbal teas that help with the color, for a mixture that’s half apple cider vinegar and half tea. I’m fair-haired so I like adding chamomile tea to the rinse. For dark hair, adding a decoction of walnut husk to to the ACV will keep it shiny and nice. Don’t worry, the vinegar smell will dissipate after your hair dries.
Note: use a dark colored towel because it may stain a lighter color towel.
For herbal hair rinse ideas, see this blog post.

The Best Love is Free Love

The best thing that I have found for the hair is free! Give yourself a scalp massage and finger-comb your hair!
I like to stand outside with my head upside down (it’s a little silly looking but it feels awesome) and run my clean fingers through my hair. Your hands are a lot different than a hairbrush because they are porous and thus they are the best at stimulating and distributing your hair’s natural oils.
Plus. the extra oils and hairs can easily be removed from your hands, so you don’t have to worry about the build up on the brush. This is really helpful for split ends, dandruff and for keeping your hair healthy and growing long.

For your Body

Baths

I hope you have a bathtub because they can be SO healing for the skin and they’re not all that expensive. You’ll want to have a tub strainer because you don’t want all these herbs going down your drain. It’s not important to measure this out perfectly, but it is important to have fun with it! Here’s my favorite herbal bath, you don’t need all of these herbs or salts, any mixture of herbal love is great:
Herbal Bath Recipe
  • A cup or two of oatmeal – organic rolled oats are wonderful!
  • 2+ cups of good salt – I use Dead Sea salt and Himalayan pink salt but epsom salt or any good salt you have works great
  • A couple tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 heaping teaspoon of coconut oil
  • Herbs like rose, lavender, kava, skullcap, yarrow and rue are great to add to the bath. The best way to add them is to put them into a little teabag or a sack, but I like to add handfuls of herbs straight to my water and then strain it out when I’m finished.

Foot Soaks

What do our feet have to do with our health? All of our blood has to circle down through our feet and then back up our bodies. Gravity makes it difficult for toxins and particles in the blood to travel back upwards so they get deposited into the feet.
We have nerve endings in our feet that relate to different parts of our whole body, so toxin deposits down there are no good. It’s important to take good care of our hooves so that we can feel great and be beautiful!
It’s like a small scale bath recipe that you can make on your stove and enjoy anywhere in your house – I love to do a foot soak while I’m doing dishes! Just keep your feet in it for at least a half hour to an hour:
Herbal Foot Soak Recipe
  • 1/2 cup of good salt
  • A couple teaspoons of baking soda
  • A heaping teaspoon of coconut oil
  • Herbs like rose, lavender, kava, skullcap, yarrow, and tea tree are great!
Pro tip: Do a face steam with your pot of water while you’re making your foot soak. Add in a mask while you’re sitting with your feet in a soak and turn it into a special night. :)

What’s your favorite inexpensive beauty trick? Share it in the comments :)

5 Tips and DIY Recipes for Natural Summer Beauty

Summer Beauty Recipes
Summer is a romantic season, complete with sun-flushed cheeks, rejuvenating vacations, and an explosion of fruit.
But it has a dark side.
Dehydration, sun damage, stinky armpits. This is REAL summer.
Jokes aside, we’re here to talk about staying healthy this summer. We’re bringing you some of our best tips and DIY recipes to keep your skin clean, safe, and looking amazing this summer.

1. Find a water bottle you actually enjoy using.

I don’t know about you, but I have a better success rate with some water bottles than with others. The wrong sized mouth can leave me with more water on my shirt than in my body. Others open and spill in my bag, resulting in an unhappily soggy cell phone situation. Staying hydrated is the key to summer beauty (and beauty in general), so a less-than-ideal water bottle just won’t cut it.
If you’re pain averse, indecisive, or for some other reason don’t see yourself ever getting a tattoo, consider expressing your individuality through your choice in water bottles. Are you rugged, practical, and kind of intense?
“Brew” some infused water to motivate yourself to stay hydrated. It’s hard to do it wrong; you can use this recipe as inspiration:

Cucumber Lemon Basil Water

Ingredients:
  • 10 slices of lemon
  • 10 slices of cucumber
  • 10 leaves of basil, muddled
  • 4 cups of water
Directions:
Place lemon, cucumber, and basil leaves in a pitcher, and then pour the water into it. Let the ingredients mingle in the refrigerator for at least an hour before enjoying.

2. Smell amazing…naturally!

It’s summer; you’re at your sexiest! Your skin is dewy, your hair is sun kissed, and you are WEARING that summer dress. Except, oh wait, you smell terrible. Or you smell okay, but it’s because you’re using unnatural, unhealthy deodorant.
We recently blogged about common ingredients found in skin care that should be avoided. Second on the list was aluminum, an ingredient in most deodorants you find on the shelf. If you haven’t already, it’s time to make the switch to something free of toxins.
Our first tip: eat fenugreek! This plant has the amazing ability to make your sweat smell like syrup. It sounds crazy, but it’s true. A popular way to reap these benefits is by eating the sprouted seeds. To sprout, soak seeds in water overnight, or for about eight hours. Drain out the water, then rinse and drain seeds once or twice a day, for three days. Sprouts can be thrown in a salad, added to a sandwich, or even eaten alone. (I like them with honey mustard.) You will soon notice that your sweat is sweeter!
One of our go-to guides for natural beauty is Brigitte Mars’ book Beauty by Nature. She shares many tips on naturally smelling good, and includes several recipes for homemade deodorant. Here is one to try:

Deodoraroma

Ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons witch hazel
  • 3 tablespoons distilled water
  • 2 drops safe essential oil
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a fine-spray mist bottle, or store in a glass jar and apply with a cotton ball.

3. Protect your skin and heal past damage.

If you’re prone to freckles or sun spots, you’re likely to see more during the summer. Of course, protecting your skin from the sun is mandatory. We might be biased, but we LOVE our sun protection lotion, Sun Love. Not only does it have 18% zinc oxide—trusted as the safest and most effective sun protection ingredient—but it also contains antioxidant herbs like green tea that help prevent free radical damage. Plus, it’s tinted and moisturizing for your skin perfection.
If you’re looking for a natural way to lighten up your existing sun damage or scars, here’s a delicious face mask recipe from Beauty Banter. Lemon and honey both help lighten the skin, while banana nourishes and creates the perfect mask consistency.

Banana Face Mask

Ingredients:
  • 1 ripe banana (or substitute ½ cup of ripe papaya)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ cup of oats (optional)
Directions:
Mash up banana in a bowl, and then add honey and lemon juice. If you are using oats as well, add them in and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before you apply. Use this mask on clean skin, and let it soak in for 15-20 minutes before washing it off.

4. Know your oils!

Different oils have different properties and thus, different effects on your skin. If you don’t know which oil works the best for you, it’s time to find out! If you have a favorite oil, consider switching it up during the summer months. Sun can dry out the skin, causing some people to produce extra oil, and causing others to show signs of aging.
  • Coconut oil: If you’re feeling drier than normal, coconut oil is your best friend. Known to soothe inflamed skin, it’s also a good oil to use when you’ve gotten a little too much sun.
  • Hazelnut oil: If you are oilier than normal this time of year, hazelnut oil will moisturize without making you greasy. It also has astringent and antibacterial properties to keep any breakouts you may be experiencing in check.
  • Jojoba Oil: This one can work well for a broad spectrum of skin types. What makes this oil perfect for summer is that it reduces water loss without completely blocking the transportation of vapor and gases. This helps your skin stay firm and taut.

Make your own facial oil!

Ingredients:
  • 1 ounce of a carrier oil of your choice, such as coconut, hazelnut or jojoba
  • 15 drops of essential oil of your choice
Wondering which essential oil to choose? Here are a few favorites:
  • Neroli oil: Not only does it smell amazing, but it promotes relaxation! Its antibacterial properties make it a good choice for those with acne-prone skin, but it also works well for dry skin types.
  • Carrot seed oil: This earthy smelling oil is stimulating and helps combat dry skin (which is why we put it in our Anti-Aging Facial Oil).
  • Passion fruit seed oil: The high vitamin C and antioxidant content of this oil make it a great anti-aging oil.

5. Juice it up!

Your summer beauty regimen is not complete without fresh juices. We love drinking juice throughout the year, but summer’s certainly the best time for juicing. Why?
  • Antioxidants in fresh squeezed juice help neutralize free radicals. Since UV rays can stimulate the production of free radicals, you need more antioxidants when you spend time in the sun.
  • ‘Tis the season of fresh produce! Summer brings an abundance of fruits and veggies, so take advantage and buy what’s fresh.
  • Many people find that they are less hungry during warm months due to lower metabolic needs (your body normally spends a lot of energy warming itself up). Experiment with replacing a meal a day with a juice, and see how you feel. Remember to use more veggies than fruit to avoid excess sugar.
Kris Carr is our juice muse. She not only transformed her life by incorporating green juices and other healthy foods into her life, but she has helped thousands of others do the same! And she does it all with humor.
Her site and books have dozens of delicious juice recipes, including this one we love:

The Pretty Juice (makes 10 ounces)

Ingredients:
  • 3 to 4 leaves of romaine lettuce
  • 3 to 4 leaves of kale
  • 3 to 4 leaves of endive
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 2 broccoli stems
  • 1 cucumber
  • 5 to 6 strawberries
  • 2 to 3 basil leaves
  • a couple pinch of wheatgrass (optional)
Directions:
Wash all produce and send it through your juicer. Sprinkle the wheatgrass on top.
When it comes to summer beauty, keep it healthy! Sun protection is not optional and hydration is your job. A big thanks to the Home Shopping Network for inviting us to write this post. Here’s to a safe and stylish summer!

What are your recipes for natural summer beauty?

Make Your Own Masks: 5 DIY Anti-Aging Skin Care Recipes

AntiAging DIY
All you have to do is browse a few birthday cards before it becomes really apparent: people have an aversion to getting older. We’re all for age-acquired wisdom and a lifetime of memories to look back on, but we also wouldn’t turn down eternally youthful skin!

Our Recipes for Homemade Anti-Aging Masks

Our team put together some facemask recipes we love for keeping skin looking youthful. Many of these ingredients are fresh, so your skin will benefit from the high nutrient content. Don’t worry! We’re not expecting you to go forage in your backyard for herbs or swim to Atlantis to collect a mystical sand substance. We kept it mostly to ingredients you have in your kitchen.
Before applying a mask, cleanse your skin. After you apply the mask, lay down with your feet in the air to encourage blood to flow toward your face. Surround yourself with sounds you love—classical music, ocean waves, Food Network (we won’t judge). In general, you can leave a mask on for about 15-20 minutes, or until it dries. If it dries too quickly, spritz it with water or toner. Rinse your mask off with warm water, and use a washcloth if needed to completely remove it. Splash your face with cold water to close your pores. Follow with your normal toner, serum, and oil. Voila! People will be asking you whether you’re taking algebra or geometry next semester. Okay, probably not, but if those are the results you are expecting, it’s not your skin that’s the problem…

Brightening and Lightening Mask

Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon organic yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon sandalwood powder
Instructions: If you find your skin is looking dull, mix all these ingredients, apply to your face, and leave it on until it dries. When you wash it off, your skin will be bright and refreshed! Lemon juice is a natural skin brightener. Think middle school days of putting lemon juice in your hair to lighten it. Sandalwood powder has a myriad of benefits and is of high importance in Ayurvedic medicine. One of its many benefits is to repair skin damage and promote new skin growth. The lactic acid in yogurt helps to smooth and moisturize the skin. Massage the ingredients into your face as your rinse them off for some exfoliation.

“Caught with Egg on Your Face” Mask

Ingredients: All you need is an egg!
Instructions: Beat the egg and apply the mixture to your face. Once it dries, wash off for skin that’s tighter and more toned. The protein in the egg promotes tissue repair and growth, which leads to stronger, wrinkle-free skin. The potassium preserves the moisture in skin cells. Riboflavin (also known as B2) eliminates toxic and cell-damaging free radicals that create wrinkles. Lastly, magnesium slows down the aging process. Eggs are truly nourishing both for your insides and your outsides!

Remedy for Under-Eye Bags

Ingredients:
  • White tea
Instructions: Start by brewing yourself a cup of white tea. It’s best if you bring your water to a rolling boil, then wait a minute or two to let it cool down before steeping the tea. Once the tea has steeped and has cooled to a temperature your face can handle, soak a washcloth in the liquid and place the cloth over your eyes. Your pores will open up from the heat, allowing the tea to penetrate into your skin and work its magic. White tea works to de-puff your eyes because it’s loaded with antioxidants. It’s good for the rest of your face, too!

Avocado Honey Heaven

Ingredients:
  • ½ small, ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
Instructions: Mix ingredients together and apply to your face. If you have combination skin, you may want to apply only to the drier areas of your face. You can leave it on for around 15 minutes, but feel free to take a nap and leave it on a little longer. For deeper penetration into your pores, warm the honey before mixing with the avocado.
Moisturized skin is the enemy of aging. The fats in avocado add moisture to your skin, while the vitamin E helps heal damage. Honey is a humectant, meaning it binds moisture the skin. It is also antibacterial and has brightening properties.

Rejuvenating Mask

This recipe from Natural Skin Care: Alternative & Traditional Techniques, by Joni Loughran.
Ingredients:
  • 1 teaspoon of facial-quality clay (our Purifying Mud Mask would work perfectly)
  • 1 teaspoon of instant oatmeal or oat flour
  • ½ tablespoon of powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • water, to achieve paste consistency
  • 1 drop of any essential oil that you love (neroli, rose, lavender, or frankincense would be perfect!)
Instructions: Mix first five ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Add enough water to make the mixture into a paste. Add the essential oil of your choice (just a drop!) and mix until combined. Apply to your face and enjoy ten minutes of aromatherapy! Clay is rich in minerals and removes toxins from the skin. No matter our age, skin can always benefit from detoxing! Milk cleanses and nourishes. Make sure to use high quality, organic, full fat milk for optimal benefits. Olive oil provides moisture and minerals, and is also believed to have wound-healing powers. Honey helps bind this moisture to your skin and lends its own anti-bacterial and skin brightening qualities. The benefits from the essential oil will differ depending on which you choose, but choose an aroma you love and breathe deep to relax and de-stress.
Having some recipes for anti-aging masks allows you to whip up something fresh whenever you and your skin need a boost. Try to make time for a weekly mask to keep your skin young and nourished. Invite a friend over and treat him or her to your favorite recipe.
